Merry Christmas!

The Son of God became a man to enable men to become the sons of God.
-C.S.Lewis
Christmas day around here is pretty laid back. Right now we're watching a Charlie Brown Christmas and waiting for the cinnamon rolls to finish cooking. Benji had so much fun opening his presents this morning. We didn't get him a lot, and we didn't get each other anything, because we're trying to save money for our big move. Have I mentioned our big move yet? Well, we're moving across the country! My husband currently works in retail, and I babysit a couple of kids, but even still we're barely making ends meet. My family is all in Oregon, and my brother works for a tech company out there and has been telling James he could get him a job for a while now, and we recently came to the conclusion that that would be the best move for us. So we're packing our bags and heading out west. We're regular pioneers! Or something... I'll write more about all of that later, but back to Christmas...

Tomorrow we will be heading to my in-laws for a nice little Christmas vacation, I can't wait!

Last night, we let Benji open one very special present a day early.

I am so grateful for all the wonderful gifts bestowed upon us by family and friends, and especially for the most important gift of all - our savior, born in a stable so long ago.

Merry Christmas, and may we all be ever grateful for all the gifts we have received.

Wordless Wednesday#12 : Nice Hat Benji

That hat isn't for your head, Benji...

So because I had a pre-eclampsia diagnosis with Benji (I'm still not convinced I actually had it, but that's another story for another day), my midwives want me to do a 24 hour urine collection to check for proteins in my urine. Complete waste of time and money if you ask me, but nobody asked, just told. But anyway, Benji found the collection "hat" and though it made a pretty good dress-up hat. At least this was before I started using it...

Pregnancy Update: 17 Weeks

So I'm officially 17 weeks pregnant now and I figured it was time I start updating on my pregnancy. I probably won't do weekly updates, more likely just when I go to the see the midwives (which was actually 2 weeks ago, but who's counting?). So here we go, an update of the last 4 months.

Weeks pregnant: 17

Estimated due date: May 15, 2013 (hoping to make it at least TO if not past this date!)

Symptoms: Aside from a slightly weakened immune system which has left me with a couple of colds,  I haven't really had any symptoms. First trimester came and went without any nausea or vomiting, but plenty of tiredness (which could also be attributed to the toddler that was still waking every 1 1/2 to 2 hours every night to nurse, more on that in another post!).

Feelings:  (Feelings, whoa-oh feelings. Anyone else get that song stuck in their head when they hear that word? No? Just me then, alright.) Anyway, I'm  feeling really good right now. I've got some energy back and I don't have a cold right now. I'm excited for our next appointment: ultrasound day!

Baby's size: 5 ounces and 5 inches, so teensy!

Weight gain so far: Don't hate me, but this is how it went last time, too. By my first appointment at 8 weeks, I was down about 11 pounds from the last time I'd weighed myself a couple months earlier. Since then I gained 2 lbs, but lost it and I'm down to my starting weight again. (Last time, the initial loss was more like 20ish lbs...)

Movement: I keep thinking I feel flutters here and there, but nothing consistent or blatantly obvious yet. But both times the midwives have tried to find the heartbeat, he/she squirms away and makes it impossible (Benji did the same).

Gender:  No idea. My pregnancy is going the same as Benji's, so that makes me think boy. But I really have no idea. We go in for our anatomy scan soon (not telling when) and could find out the sex then, but we're not sure we're going to. We didn't want to find out with Benji, but kind of got talked into it, and in all reality, it would have been pretty hard to avoid since the first thing we saw at the ultrasound was him frog-legged and showing off his bits. Maybe this one will do the same and we won't have a choice, but right now I'm torn on whether or not to find out.

Maternity clothes: Haven't bought anything new, and probably won't. Timing worked out just right and I'm pregnant in the same seasons again, so I can wear everything from last time. I could probably still fit in my regular clothes, but I've switched to the wide-elastic-band type pants (not the full panels yet) and I've worn a maternity shirt once so far.

Baby stuff: We're really not planning to buy a lot for this baby. If its' a boy, we're all set for clothes, and everything else we got for Benji was gender-neutral, so we've still got the swing, bouncy seat, bottles, burp cloths, blankets, baby toys and all that. And we're planning to cosleep again, so we're not even going to get a crib for this little one, since Benji's is still sitting unused in his room, it seems like a waste of $200-300 dollars. So the only things we'll really need are a car seat, a baby floor gym (which we never got for Benji, but it would have been nice to have), and clothes if it's a girl. And I might get a better breast pump if I can get insurance to pay for it, but that's not really "baby stuff" is it?

Big brother prep:  So far we haven't really done anything. A baby growing in mommy's belly and not coming out for five and a half more months is a completely abstract and foreign concept to a 20 month old, especially one who's still not great with language. As we get closer we'll start reading books about being a big brother and talking about it more, but so far all we've done is say "you know there's a baby in mommy's belly?" once in a while, and he usually says "no."

So there's the super-long first pregnancy update, hopefully the rest will be a little shorter since they won't be 4 months worth of updates in one.

Gratituesday 8: Month of Thankfulness

So on Facebook for November, a lot of people were posting daily about what they were thankful for. I jumped on the bandwagon, but like most things, I didn't really finish it (do I ever finish anything?). But I did make it up until Thanksgiving day, so I think that counts, right? I thought I'd post my list here, so I have it all in one place and can look back and remember all the things I have to be thankful for.

Just to clarify - some of these things were specific to the day on which they were written, so they may not make perfect sense out of context, but they make sense to me. And it's all about me, right?

Day 1: I am so very thankful for a husband who forgives my faults.
Day 2: I am grateful for midwives and the awesome care they provide (12 week appointment today!)
Day 3: I'm thankful for Mom-friends. Playgroup with the kids yesterday and Mommy's Night Out tonight, hooray!
Day 4: Today I am thankful that Benji apparently did get the whole daylight savings thing and let me sleep in (until what would have been 8:30, which is actually 2 hours more than I usually get!) Thanks little Monkey
Day 5: Today I am thankful for the opportunity to stay home with my little love, I'm so glad to be able to watch him grow and develop since he changes so much each day.
Day 6: Today I am thankful for my right to vote. I don't have a lot of faith in our government, but I will play my part and hope for the best.
Day 7: Today I am thankful that my hope does not lie in the government.
Day 8: Today I am thankful that I don't have to drive to work in the snow! And thankful that my husband is an experienced and cautious snow-driver.
Day 9: Today I am thankful for my parents. They raised me with morals, values and a sense of right and wrong. It may not have always been fun growing up, but the phrase "you'll thank me when you're older" could not be more true. Thanks Mom and Dad, love you both.
Day 10: Today I am thankful for modern car seats. No one ever expects to be in a car accident, but should the unexpected happen, a properly used car seat will save Benji's life. I would never dream of risking his life by not using one or using it inappropriately.
Day 11: Today I am thankful to all the veterans (and those currently serving) who have dedicated and risked their lives to protect our nation.
Day 12: Today I am thankful for the good health of our family, especially for a toddler with a strong immune system! (And wouldn't you know it, he got sick a couple days later. haha kids!)
Day 13: Today I am thankful that we have enough food to eat, even if food aversion is still making everything sound icky to me.
Day 14: Today I am thankful for the roof over our heads. We live in a warm, comfortable, well maintained apartment - the first I've felt was really "home" and for that I am very grateful.
Day 15: Today I am thankful for breastfeeding. Extended breastfeeding may not be popular (but when I have been popular?), but it is recommended that breastfeeding should continue to "two years or beyond". Benji is 20 months today and still going.
Day 16: Today I am thankful that I have Fridays off since all Benji wanted to do was cuddle alllllll day long.
I am also thankful for my Dad (again). Happy birthday Dad!

Day 17: Today I am thankful that Benji still likes to be carried in the Ergo, made having to do all that grocery shopping while he was feeling sickly a lot easier.
Day 18: today I am thankful for the sound of toddler laughter after a hard day. And thankful for the husband who's pretending to sneeze out weird things to make the toddler laughter happen.
Day 19: Today I am thankful for understanding employers (clients?) who give me the day off when I need it. Benji has been a sickly, clingy, whiny mess today, poor guy.
Day 20: Today I am thankful that Benji was a little less clingy and let me get some cleaning done before the family comes.
Day 21: Today I am thankful for Jackie and Charlie, the best in-laws a girl could ask for. They put up with me living with them for 2 years and they've always treated me like family, I can always rely on them and they're wonderful garndparents! Love you Jackie and Charlie, see you later today!

Day 22: Today on this beautiful Thanksgiving day, I am thankful to the One who provides all blessings. God has truly blessed me with wonderful family, wonderful friends and a happy and safe life and I am beyond grateful.

And I just realized I never mentioned my siblings. I am so thankful for all of my siblings, whether by blood or marriage. My brother and sister and I may not have gotten along as kids, but we have become friends. And all of my brothers- and sisters-in-law are such wonderful people and have always been so sweet to me, so glad to have such great families-by-marriage.
I also eluded to my husband, my son, and my baby-to-be, but never really delved into just how thankful I am for my little family. I haven't done much in this life that I can look back on with no regrets, but marrying my husband and building a family with him is one of those things. I am beyond grateful for the blessings God has given me in such an amazing little family. A husband who loves and cares for me, a perfect little boy (even when he's challenging), and another little blessing on the way (who hasn't even made me throw up once!), who could ask for more?

So there you have it. A full month (almost) of thankfulness. What are you thankful for?

Breastfeeding Photos

This week's topic on the breastfeeding blog hop is breastfeeding photos. I love seeing photos of women breastfeeding their babies, there's just something so peaceful and beautiful about it. Unfortunately, until recently, I wasn't comfortable having my photo taken while breastfeeding and I really regret that I deleted the one picture I had of me nursing Benji in the hospital after he was born. What a wonderful keepsake that would have made. But I was self conscious and yelled at my husband for taking it and promptly deleted it from the camera. This time around, I'll let hubby take as many pictures as he wants (within reason, of course), because we'll never get those days of nursing that precious newborn back.

But enough babbling, on to the photo! This picture was taken this morning, not the best photo, but it's a glimpse into nursing a toddler.

A few months ago Benji and I had the opportunity to be photographed by a wonderful local photographer. She took some beautiful photos of us and some other moms nursing their babies. I posted all the photos she took of us on a Wordless Wednesday post during World Breastfeeding Week. You can click here to see the photos.

Menu Plan Monday #11

Menu planning has been no easy task lately. This pregnancy has made me completely lose my appetite. Don't get me wrong, I'm still ravenous, and food generally tastes good, but nothing appeals to me; nothing sounds good. So when I sit down to think of what to make for meals each week, I keep drawing a bunch of blanks. But I have my two hungry men to feed, and while the big one would be content to find his own dinner most days, the little one pretty much relies on me to make sure he's fed. So I've racked my brain, and come up with some meals that, while they don't appeal to me in thought, will hopefully keep us all nourished and happy.

Dinner - Chicken nuggets, oven fries, steamed mixed veggies

D - Cheese ravioli and salad

Giveaway Results!

Remember when I told you I was participating in a giveaway over at Mommy of One and Counting. Well the giveaway closed and winner was announced on October 3rd, congratulations to Jennifer. And guess what? I already finished the custom organic cotton hat! Jennifer chose a Dogwood Heather (dusty pink) and Marshmallow (creamy off-white) striped hat, and the colors are beautiful together!

Beautiful hat for the lucky winner!

With my crazy busy life and my slow-poke, procrastinating ways, I was afraid this project would take forever. But I buckled down (and luckily only had one extra kid for most of the week) and spent every spare minute on this project and managed to finish it in what I consider a very reasonable amount of time. And it is off on it's way to its new home tomorrow morning! Now it's time for me to concentrate once again on a gift I have been working on for months (it's coming little Lola, don't worry!)

Interested in purchasing a similar hat? I have a couple in my Etsy shop right now, and I am willing to take custom orders if you're flexible with your timing, I can't guarantee that I will be able to finish anything quickly.
